Vendor Managed Inventory and In-Plant Logistics in Terre Haute, Indiana

Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) is a supply chain model where the vendor (not the customer) takes responsibility for monitoring stock levels and triggering replenishment. When the system runs through a 3PL, the warehouse becomes the center of the supply chain. We hold the inventory, track what moves, share that data with the vendor, and fulfill outbound orders. The manufacturer never has to issue a purchase order. The product is there when the plant needs it.

How VMI Works at Distributors Terminal

We have been doing this for manufacturers in the Midwest for decades. Our model is simple.

  1. A supplier stores inventory here under their name.
  2. Our warehouse management system tracks on-hand levels, inbound shipments, outbound pulls, and usage velocity (all in real time, down to the SKU)
  3. When stock hits the agreed replenishment threshold, the vendor sees it and ships before a shortage develops.
  4. The manufacturer takes possession at the dock.

Most of our VMI customers operate on a consignment basis. The supplier owns the inventory while it sits in our facility. The customer pays when product is consumed or shipped. That structure keeps working capital off the manufacturer’s books and puts replenishment responsibility with the party who has the best visibility into supply.

Some programs run on a customer-owned model, where the customer holds title but the vendor still controls replenishment decisions. For operations distributing to multiple locations, a hub-and-spoke setup where the vendor replenishes a central inventory hub at the warehouse works well.

Inventory Visibility and Technology

The foundation of any VMI program is data. Our WMS shares real-time inventory levels, usage trends, inbound status, aging, and order activity with the vendor. That data can flow through EDI, API integrations, or scheduled reporting depending on what your systems support.

Replenishment triggers are defined up front: min/max thresholds, days of supply targets, forecast-based planning, or kanban-style reorder signals. The right model depends on your operation. We work with your team to define those rules before the program goes live, because that is where most VMI programs run into trouble.

Custom Warehousing Built Around Your Operation

Our Terre Haute 3PL warehouses are purpose-built for plant support. Bulk floor storage, double-stacked, ambient and climate-controlled options. If your operation has specific labeling, compliance, or delivery requirements, we build the process around those requirements.

VMI programs fail when inventory data is delayed, replenishment rules are poorly defined, or no one owns accountability for accuracy. Distributors Terminal’s structure avoids those failure points because we have defined thresholds, consistent communication, and a team that has been doing this for years.

When a VMI program is set up correctly, the benefits compound over time. Vendors react faster to consumption trends, which reduces stockouts and smooths out replenishment cycles. Procurement teams place fewer manual orders, which frees up labor for higher-value work.

Midwest Access from Terre Haute

Terre Haute sits 60 miles west of Indianapolis, with direct access to I-70, I-65, and I-69. From here, we can reach Chicago, St. Louis, Louisville, and Columbus within hours. For manufacturers running just-in-time operations, location matters. We are in the middle of where your freight needs to go.
